OS settings: how to enable the microphone in Windows

If the microphone is disabled in Windows settings, follow these steps.


Windows 10

  1. Go to StartSettingsSystemSound.
  2. In the Input section, select the required microphone, if there are several, and click Device properties.

  3. Make sure the Disable option is not active. If it is active, click it to enable the microphone.

  4. Also check that microphone access is allowed in privacy settings:
    • StartSettingsPrivacyMicrophone.
    • Enable the Allow apps to access your microphone option.

Windows 11

  1. Go to StartSystemSound.

  2. In the Input section, select the required microphone.

  3. In the General block, make sure this device is allowed for use.
    Windows 11: check that the device is enabled
  4. Also check privacy settings:
    • StartPrivacy & securityMicrophone.
    • Enable microphone access for apps.
